Session

For all practical purposes, the governance of First Presbyterian Church is shared by the pastor and the elected lay officers who serve as session elders or as deacons on the board of deacons.

Session is comprised of 14 members who are elected by the congregation to serve as elders for the congregation.  Session also includes a clerk and moderator to ensure that the business of the church runs in an orderly fashion.  Together with the pastor, elders exercise leadership and have oversight for the life of the congregation.

"It is the duty of elders, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation committed to their charge" (Book of Order G-6.0304)

"Elders should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment" (Book of Order G-6.0303)

Session elders lead seven different committees which share the responsibilities of planning the activities of the church.
Members of the congregation are encouraged to participate in the work and mission of the church by volunteering to be members-at-large on the committee of their choice.  More information for each committee is available by clicking on the Ministries menu item or by following the links provided above.
