Deacons
For all practical purposes, the governance of First Presbyterian Church is shared by the pastor and the elected lay officers who serve as Session Elders or as Deacons on the Board of Deacons. The Board of Deacons is comprised of 12 members who are elected by the congregation to provide compassionate and loving service to the members and friends of this Congregation. Each member serves a two-year term."The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ" (Book of Order G-6.0401).
"It is the duty of the deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session" (Book of Order G-6.0402).
The Board is divided into four committees; Administrative, Worship Support, Congregational Outreach, and Community Outreach. The committees are comprised of three deacons and other members who carry out the tasks of the committees. Some of the Deacons’ projects include the donation of flowers for the Sanctuary each Sunday, serving home Communions, coordinating Meals on Wheels volunteers, visiting homebound members and administering the Deacon’s Benevolent fund which helps those in financial need.
